At just 17 years old, Joshua Odunze had already spent more time in hospitals than most people do in a lifetime.
When he was asked about his experience living with sickle cell disorder, he had this to say:
“My journey with sickle cell disease has been both challenging and enlightening. I discovered that I had sickle cell disease in my early teenage years, but it was after completing secondary school that I became more aware of what it truly meant to be a sickle cell warrior. Since then, my life has been a continuous journey of learning, adapting, and persevering.
Today, I am a graduate, and looking back, I can clearly see how sickle cell disease has influenced many aspects of my life. It affected my academic pursuits, often making it difficult to keep up with the demands of school. There were times when my health challenges interrupted my studies and forced me to work harder just to achieve what others often took for granted.
Beyond academics, sickle cell disease has also impacted my social life and daily living. There were moments when I had to miss out on activities, events, and opportunities because my health would not allow me to participate fully. Living with sickle cell has required me to constantly balance my desire to live freely with the need to protect my health.
One of the most difficult aspects of the condition has been the financial burden. Managing sickle cell disease requires continuous medical attention, medications, hospital visits, and routine care. Even today, it remains financially demanding because maintaining good health requires consistent investment and vigilance.
Over time, I have learned that coping with sickle cell disease begins with acceptance. I acknowledge that the sickle cell gene is part of my reality, and I understand that there are certain things I may not be able to do in the same way as others. While this reality can sometimes be exhausting, it has also taught me resilience and self-awareness.
The life I live today is not exactly the life I imagined before discovering my condition. There are days when the journey feels overwhelming, and the physical and emotional toll can be difficult to bear. However, I have learned to face each day with courage and determination.
My coping strategies have become an essential part of my survival. I remain committed to my daily medications and follow my treatment routine faithfully. I have learned to recognize the triggers that can lead to a sickle cell crisis and do my best to avoid them. Most importantly, I stay prepared for unexpected changes in my health and take immediate action whenever necessary.
This journey has been filled with ups and downs. I have faced numerous health challenges affecting my body, my blood, and even my internal organs. The road has not been easy, and there have been many difficult moments along the way. Yet despite the obstacles, I continue to move forward.
Being a sickle cell warrior has taught me strength, patience, and endurance. Every day presents a new challenge, but it also presents a new opportunity to keep fighting, keep hoping, and keep living. My story is not defined by sickle cell disease alone; it is defined by my determination to survive, thrive, and make the most of each day as it comes.”
At Ese-Tonia Foundation, we remain committed to supporting sickle cell warriors and their families through education, empowerment, advocacy, and compassionate care. Every contribution, partnership, and act of kindness helps create stories like Joshua's stories of hope overcoming hardship.
Together, we can help more sickle cell warriors move from pain to purpose and from struggle to possibility.
