Every new school term begins with a sense of possibility. Across Nigeria, children prepare to reunite with friends, meet new teachers, and begin another chapter of learning. School bags are packed, exercise books are labelled, and classrooms gradually fill with eager faces.
For many vulnerable children, however, the beginning of the school year brings uncertainty. The desire to learn remains strong, but the resources needed to begin the term are often beyond the reach of the families caring for them.
Education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and opening doors to new opportunities. For children who have experienced the loss of a parent, live with sickle cell disease, or face severe economic hardship, school provides far more than academic instruction. It offers routine, stability, confidence, and a place where children can continue to grow despite difficult circumstances.
Yet many vulnerable children face barriers that place their education at risk. The inability to afford basic school supplies, the loss of a family’s primary income earner, hunger, transportation challenges, and ongoing health conditions can interrupt learning and limit a child’s potential. For children living with sickle cell disease, repeated hospital visits and pain crises often mean missed lessons. For orphaned children, the absence of consistent family support can make even the most basic school items difficult to obtain.
Recognising these challenges, Ese-Tonia Foundation launched its Back-to-School Initiative to help ensure that vulnerable children begin each academic year with dignity and the resources they need to learn.
Last year, the Foundation visited five orphanages and supported approximately 100 children between the ages of six and sixteen with school bags, shoes, exercise books, writing materials, lunch bags, water bottles, and socks. While these items may seem ordinary, they often remove obstacles that stand between a child and the classroom.
The excitement was unmistakable. Some children hugged their new backpacks before opening them. Others proudly tried on their shoes, while cheers filled the room as school supplies were distributed. Those moments served as a powerful reminder that even practical support can restore confidence and remind a child that they are seen, valued, and cared for.
This year, the initiative is expanding to reach even more vulnerable children, including children living with sickle cell disease and the children of widows participating in the EmpowerHER Future Programme. The expansion reflects the Foundation’s belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, regardless of the circumstances into which they were born.
Supporting a child’s education also strengthens families. For widows rebuilding their lives through vocational skills training, educational support helps reduce financial pressure and allows them to focus on creating sustainable livelihoods. For children living with sickle cell disease, it reinforces that their health condition should never determine the quality of their education or the possibilities for their future.
Every backpack packed, every notebook opened, and every child who walks confidently into a classroom represents an investment in tomorrow. Education has the power to change lives, but it begins by ensuring that vulnerable children have the opportunity to learn.
